Local libraries have been in on the action for the last five years or so. If you have a library card you can check out books and stream videos... at least you can here in a podunk part of the country ... I imagine it's much more sophisticated in major metro areas. Even if you don't live in a major metro area, some larger libraries (NY City, Chicago, Detroit at last check) allowed patrons from any location to join their library for a fee and then get electronic materials access.

It's also a shame that the video linked doesn't mention the free book that influenced all of Western Civilization: The Bible.
